Channel 4 Cancels Sugar Rush

by Anabel Unity Sale

Channel Four is not commissioning another series of the award-winning drama series about young lesbians in Brighton. Sugar Rush, made by production company Shine, will not continue on the channel despite its popularity with viewers and critics alike. Last November Sugar Rush won an International Emmy in America and two Stonewall Awards for Broadcaster of the Year.

Speaking exclusively to LoveGirls Johnny Capps, Sugar Rush producer and co-creator, said: "We were surprised and disappointed at Channel 4's decision not to recommission Sugar Rush, especially after its ratings and critical success. We certainly had lots of ideas of where to take the next series and it was sad not to be able to finish Kim and Sugar's story properly." He added the reason Channel 4 gave for failing to recommission the series was because the broadcaster "did not have a scheduling slot for it".

A Channel 4 spokeswoman has been quoted as saying there were never plans for a third or fourth series of Sugar Rush, insisting: "It was concluded at end of the second series because we felt the girls' story had run its course." The second series ended with Sugar moving into the flat Kim shares with her new girlfriend Saint.

Olivia Hallinan, the actress who played Kim, told LoveGirls she and the rest of the cast were very disappointed at the decision: "It is such a shame because we are all up for it."

She added that even though she was initially daunted about playing a lesbian character, she soon found it rewarding. "Sugar Rush is important for young women who are lesbian or bi. I used to get so many letters from girls about the show because they could relate to it."

We have an exclusive interview this week with Olivia (Kim) and Lenora (Sugar) from Sugar Rush. Both girls will be reading your comments about the show being cancelled and will each select a member to win a signed Sugar Rush Box Set. So girls ... how do you feel about the show being cancelled?

I am getting more and more worried about the economy and global meltdown.

The more things change the more they remain the same. The fundamental challenges we face today have changed little since Chaucer penned his observations on life and distilled them in a set of tales. In the modern city of Canterbury University Students analyse and dissect the meanings conveyed in texts set in that very locale in the 1300’s.

Youngsters face today’s Jekyll and Hyde society not knowing that the Constants remain; love, betrayal, desire, fear. Each story conveys a lesson as we study for our degree in the University of Life, the big diploma mill of which we are all Alumni. We sit grinning like Cheshire cats, thinking we have all the answers.

We call it a success when we pollute our atmosphere shooting down our own Satellite USA 193, Market Street Credibility is our preferred accreditation and recognition from our peers and fellow consumers, we Poison our Planet for Profit. Banks have crashed before and remember – you can’t eat money.

Globalization has consequences. Everything we do has consequences, even something simple like buying firewood. The Oregon ODA advises not to obtain anything from out-of-state because of all the insects and diseases it might carry. That is just a relatively local issue. Imagine all the things that are carried around the world each day – each hour. We must protect our future, just as we should remember our past. All over the world, From the UK to the USA and the Seychelles to Egypt, still, yes, STILL, there is no REAL alternative to fossil fuels.

Are we all going to purgatory in a wheelbarrow telling each other stories to pass the time? Sometimes I wonder!

Sorry guys, I had a long day and feel sick of the world. Rant Over!

Iґve been watching the serie again on last weekend after one year ago. Good things are like wine, gets better with the time. On seeing it again Iґve got amazed what a great production is it. Well directed, with an excellent rolplaying from all actors, just like a champagne glass: delicious and very fresh!
I cannot avoid to be dissapointed again on regarding the production was cancelled cos a foolish decision of channel 4. Letґs keep all the fans alive on pressing them to change opinion.
I also agree with many other fellows that will be delicious to see a movie (with the same casting of course).

I cant believe Channel 4 is being so stupid I loved watching Sugar Rush and also bought series 1&2 on dvd. How can they say that the broadcaster "did not have a scheduling slot for it" cancel some of the crap they have on at the moment and they will soon find a slot. Not only was it a brilliant show to watch but it really helped all young people understand all those feelings they have and it also touched on some really great points how how they could deal with it. I really hope that another channel picks up on C4s BIG MISTAKE and can bring us another fantastic series.

I have watched sugar rush religiously ever since it started and have been waiting and waiting for news on a third series. I can't belive that there isnt going to be one and am really dissapointed. Why cancel a high viewed show and replace it with some of the rubbish they are showing currently. A very bad decision by channel 4!!!

OMG!!! NO WAY!!!! Sugar Rush was the best tv program ever! Me and my bf have the nicknames Kim and Sugar haha.

OMG channel 4 you suck. You put on crap like secret millionaire and other random crap. It used to be great when you put Sugar Rush on after Big Brother. Best Thursday nights ever. Well you are the ones losing out.

Hope the BBC or Sky One pick it up because it can't there!!

WHAT CAN I SAY? SUGAR RUSH IS AWESOME, Sugar rush helped me to except the fact that I am GAY and theres no reason to be ashamed of myself because of it. the relationship between Kim and Sugar greatly related to my first love and I thank you for helping me find my true self and not be ashamed of it.
Thank you again.

This show has been the best show ive ever seen where other girls can relate to it, i was confused myself at the time and wal-ah here comes sugar rush to save the day lol

I loved Sugar Rush and would love to see another series. Channel 4 are talking rubbish saying they don't have a slot for it. They seem to have plenty of slots for Big Brother and E4 has plenty of slots for Friends repeats.
The BBC should pick it up and put it on BBC3
